The path from SQL to spreadsheet is historically a long, tedious one involving many Import, Upload, and Export buttons. What if I told you that you could run SQL in Google Sheets? Yes, it’s possible.
In our experience here at Kloudio, data engineers and business analysts would appreciate a functionality like this—which is why we built it.
We recognize that those who work with data—whether you’re pulling, processing, or analyzing it—have varying levels of SQL experience. Moreover, not every drag-and-drop tool can process queries like SQL can.
To better enable our users to analyze their data in a low code way, we recently rolled out a new product update: the Adhoc Query feature.
What Is the Kloudio Adhoc Query Feature?
The Adhoc Query tool allows you to run SQL queries directly from the Kloudio Google Sheets add-on. (Yes, that means running SQL in a spreadsheet.)
As a business analyst, it’s likely that your data teams or engineers give you chunks of SQL to run against your database. Or, perhaps, you know just enough SQL to be dangerous, but you always have to have to write it down to remember it and waste a lot of time trying to get the right data exported as a CSV.
With this feature, you can run SQL in Google Sheets. You can also save your recurring SQL queries as a report template to run at any time.
If you’re a data engineer or analyst that has to consistently run SQL queries for your business team, our Adhoc Query feature allows you to either give them the SQL to run in their own spreadsheet or store the query as a report that they can run anytime they need.
Why did we launch the Adhoc Query feature?
At Kloudio, we’re all about simplifying the process of accessing, preparing, and acting on your data. It’s our goal to get you from data access to data action as fast and easy as possible.
The Adhoc Query feature does just that.
With the Adhoc Query feature, you can:

- Simplify your process of running SQL queries—no more exporting CSVs and re-uploading them. All you need is Google Sheets and the Kloudio Sheets add-on.

How to Use the New Kloudio Adhoc Query Feature
Let’s unpack how to use the Kloudio Adhoc Query feature to run SQL in Google Sheets. First, from the Google Sheets Add-ons menu, select Kloudio > Adhoc Query.
The Add-on Query panel will open. Select your Connection and optionally title your Query.
In this step, you can use the Schema Browser to write out a SQL query, select the database, schema, table, and columns. Click Generate Query, and we pre-write your query for you.
The generated query gets pasted into the SQL Editor. Close the window, and the query is ready to run.
Click Run and watch your data populate your Google Sheet in seconds!
To save your query as a template or add it to a Schedule, title the query under Report Name.
To then run the report, click Add-ons > Kloudio > Run Report to open the Reports window.
Your report will be added as a new tab. Note that the query name is now the new tab name.
Under the Schedule add-on window, you can set your report to auto-refresh in the Sheets tab. You can also send yourself an email every time it refreshes so you remember to check your report.
Voila—you’ve used the Adhoc Query feature to run SQL in Google Sheets!
This is the power of the new enhancements we’ve made to our Kloudio Google Sheets Add-On! No longer do you have to manually pull files from your applications, BI tools, or databases, nor do you need to rely on your data team to provide SQL.
